What are you waiting for?

Are you waiting to be inspired to start something? Are you waiting to be motivated? Are you waiting to take action until you know what you’re doing?

It seems that sometimes we think our behaviour will change when we know how to do something better, when we feel good or when a bolt of lightning appears declaring our purpose in neon lights. We think everything has to be right for us to move and take action.

The order of events goes something like this — inspiration, motivation, action.

Here’s a made-up scenario:

  • [I need to be inspired] I saw this amazing talk the other day by a writer and she inspired me to do what I’ve dreamed of — write a book, I can do it.
  • [I need to be motivated] I don’t know how to write a book, it would take me ages, I’ll never be able to get published, no one will read it anyway, I have no energy for it now so guess I don’t really want to do it.
  • [I need to take action] I’m not going to bother trying.

We don’t start that idea or project because the inspiration gets pummelled along with our motivation by those voices in our head trying to keep us safe and comfortable.

What if you try flipping the order to see if those voices are still as loud. What if you start with action, and head towards motivation, and inspiration.

Here’s another possible made-up scenario:

  • [I need to take action] I’ll start writing a story today, 1000 words seems ok.
  • [I need to be motivated] I can’t believe how easily I got into the zone and wrote 1000 words every day this week.
  • [I need to be inspired] Wow if I keep this up I will have written a book in 3 months! I’m going to keep going, I can do it!

Waiting to be inspired or feel motivated isn’t always the easiest route to taking action. Why not just get started and see if more motivation comes or if you can inspire yourself!
